Psychoeducational Evaluations
in New York and Vermont

When a student is struggling academically — despite effort, support, and access to instruction — a comprehensive psychoeducational evaluation can identify why. These evaluations assess the cognitive, learning, and processing factors that affect academic performance, providing families and educators with the information needed to put the right supports in place.

MindWell’s licensed clinicians conduct thorough psychoeducational evaluations for children, adolescents, and adults across New York and Vermont. Every assessment includes a detailed written report and a dedicated review session to walk through findings, diagnoses, and recommendations with you and your family.

Understanding Psychoeducational Evaluations

A psychoeducational evaluation is a comprehensive assessment of how a person learns, processes information, and performs academically. It examines the cognitive and academic factors that underlie performance — including reading, writing, math, memory, processing speed, and executive functioning — to identify both areas of strength and areas where support is needed.

These evaluations are used to diagnose learning disabilities such as dyslexia, dyscalculia, and disorder of written expression, as well as other conditions that affect academic performance. They also produce the documentation required to access accommodations in school, on standardized tests, and in higher education settings.

A psychoeducational evaluation does not just identify what is hard. It explains why — and points toward what will actually help.

What to Expect During Your Psychoeducational Evaluation

What to Expect During Your Psychoeducational Evaluation

Your first appointment is a comprehensive clinical interview with one of our licensed clinicians. We will gather detailed information about your academic history, current concerns, and daily functioning — at school or work, and at home. For children and adolescents, parents and caregivers are an essential part of this conversation. This session gives us the full picture we need to design an individualized evaluation that addresses your specific concerns.

Testing Conducted in person

The testing session is where the formal evaluation takes place. Depending on age and referral concerns, testing typically includes standardized measures of cognitive ability, academic achievement, memory, processing speed, attention, and executive functioning. Sessions generally last three to five hours and may be completed in a single visit or across two sessions depending on the scope of the evaluation. We recommend scheduling at a time when you or your child is well-rested and at your best.

What Testing Looks Like

Testing is not a pass or fail — it is a structured way of understanding how a person learns and processes information. Here is what to expect:

Cognitive Assessments — Standardized tasks measuring reasoning, memory, processing speed, and executive functioning. These tasks help identify how a person thinks and processes information, independent of academic content.

Academic Achievement Measures — Assessments of reading, writing, and math skills that identify where performance falls relative to grade or age expectations and help pinpoint the specific nature of any academic difficulties.

Behavioral & Attention Rating Scales — Questionnaires completed by parents, teachers, or the individual that provide context on attention, behavior, and functioning across settings.

Clinical Observation — Your clinician will observe how you or your child approaches tasks, manages effort, and responds throughout the session. These observations inform the overall interpretation of results.

Summary & Review of Recommendations Can be completed virtually

Once testing is complete and scored, your clinician will prepare a comprehensive written report. You will then meet to review the findings together — including a clear explanation of results, any diagnoses, and specific actionable recommendations for academic supports, accommodations, and next steps. For school-age children, the report will include documentation suitable for use with schools, committees on special education, and standardized testing boards. You will leave this appointment with a full copy of the report and a clear path forward.

Key Benefits of Psychological Testing

Psychoeducational Evaluation FAQs

MindWell conducts psychoeducational evaluations for individuals ages 5 and up. These evaluations are most commonly sought for school-age children experiencing academic difficulties, though adults who suspect an undiagnosed learning disability — particularly those navigating college or career challenges — are also appropriate candidates.

Families and individuals seek psychoeducational evaluations when there is a pattern of academic struggle that effort alone hasn’t resolved — difficulties with reading, writing, math, memory, or processing that affect school or work performance. An evaluation identifies the specific cognitive and academic factors driving those difficulties, which makes it possible to put the right supports in place rather than continuing to guess.

A complete psychoeducational evaluation includes a clinical intake interview, in-person cognitive and academic achievement testing, measures of attention, memory, processing speed, and executive functioning, behavioral and emotional screening, and review of prior educational records. Input from teachers and caregivers is gathered through structured questionnaires. The evaluation concludes with a comprehensive written report and a dedicated feedback session.

All in-person testing is conducted at MindWell’s Albany, New York office. Intake sessions and feedback appointments can be completed virtually for clients who are not local or prefer the convenience of a remote visit. In-person attendance at our Albany office is required for the testing session itself.

Yes. MindWell’s psychoeducational evaluation reports are designed to meet the documentation standards required by schools, committees on special education, colleges and universities, and standardized testing boards such as the SAT, ACT, GRE, LSAT, and MCAT.

The full evaluation process — from intake through feedback — typically spans four weeks. Testing sessions generally range from two to five hours depending on the type of evaluation and the age of the individual being assessed. Some evaluations may be completed across two sessions.

Following the completion of testing, clinicians typically require two to three weeks to score, interpret, and write a comprehensive report. Your feedback appointment will be scheduled once the report is complete.

At this time, MindWell is unable to bill insurance directly for psychological evaluation services. We provide superbills upon request, which clients can submit to their insurance provider for potential out-of-network reimbursement. We recommend contacting your insurance provider in advance to understand your out-of-network benefits for psychological testing.
